Objective
The Bulk‑material Low‑pressure Atomic‑scale Deposition Engine (BLADE) introduces a continuous, low‑pressure Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) technology designed specifically for flowable bulk materials such as powders and smaThe Bulk-material Low-pressure Atomic-scale Deposition Engine (BLADE) - establishes a cutting edge continuous low-pressure atomic layer deposition (ALD) process for flowable bulk materials. ALD coatings of particles can prevent corrosion of battery cathodes and anodes, reduce the amount of catalyst needed for fuel cell and electrolyser applications, enhance drug delivery capabilities of pharmaceutical powders, aid sintering of ceramics, mitigate corrosion risks in marine and space application, enhance flowability, and eliminate storage hazards of additive manufacturing powders. However, the widespread adoption of the state-of-the-art particle ALD systems is hindered by several factors, including the high initial cost of the equipment, challenges in handling batches of powder and flowable bulk material, the high-pressure operating window that warrants the use of only high-volatility precursors and a high consumption rate of inert gases and precursors. The proposed low-pressure continuous BLADE system allows for industrial-scale use of low-volatility precursors, expanding the range of applicable materials significantly. Its straightforward design eliminates the need for expensive fluidization techniques, which reduces operational costs by minimising the use of precursors and inert gases. This makes the particle ALD technique more economically viable. This innovative system would enable progress in advanced material production technologies applicable to energy conversion and storage, pharmaceutical drugs, marine and space application as well as additive manufacturing. Such a process is only possible through a creative approach that combines material sciences and advanced process engineering, bridging the worlds of fundamental research and engineering.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
