Objective
XHIST aims to introduce three-dimensional virtual histology into clinical pathology using non-destructive X-ray phase-contrast tomography. Conventional histopathology relies on micrometre-thin slices cut from standardized formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue blocks. By slicing, routinely only about 1% of the tissue in these millimeter-thick blocks is assessed and the three-dimensional organisation can only be extrapolated. XHIST mitigates these constraints by enabling volumetric imaging of entire FFPE tissue blocks with sub-micron voxel size, spatial resolution comparable to conventional histopathology, but without staining or destructive preparation and all within a time frame of two hours.
The technology builds on advances from ERC-funded research in multiscale X-ray imaging. A newly developed 150-megapixel detector, combined with high-brightness X-ray sources and phase-contrast reconstruction methods, enables simultaneous large field-of-view imaging and high spatial resolution, allowing cellular structures to be visualised across entire tissue volumes.
The objective of this Proof-of-Concept project is to translate this technology toward clinical use by developing a prototype scanner, automated acquisition and reconstruction workflows, and visualisation tools that integrate with existing pathology practice. The system will be validated in the clinical cases; (i) tumour margin assessment and (ii) detection of microvascular invasion in liver cancer.
The project will also develop an intellectual property and commercialization strategy aimed at translating XHIST into a deployable stand-alone imaging platform for hospital pathology laboratories, the primary market for the technology, and laying the foundation for a future start-up commercializing the system.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
