CIRcular Citrus Utilization through Integrated Technologies for safe high-value FOOD product development

Objective

Food systems worldwide are increasingly challenged by substantial losses occurring along the food supply chain, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable recovery strategies. Circular economy approaches provide a pathway to address this issue by promoting the valorization of underutilized resources. However, ensuring the safety of reintroduced food products remains a critical and unresolved barrier, with no widely accepted framework currently in place. The CIRCUIT-FOOD project tackles this gap by transforming citrus-derived loss streams-including whole fruits, peels and juice from unsold or damaged fruits-into value-added beverage products. Bioactive compounds will be recovered from citrus peels through targeted extraction processes and incorporated into novel juice-based formulations designed to enhance nutritional quality, stability, and potential health benefits. These formulations will undergo rigorous analytical assessment to confirm their safety and quality. To investigate their biological relevance, advanced in vitro systems mimicking human dietary exposure and disease-related conditions will be employed, focusing on inflammation, gut function, and cardiovascular health. These evaluations will be supported by metabolomic and proteomic analyses to generate in-depth insights into functional effects. Beyond food applications, the project will also explore the conversion of citrus residues into biochar, contributing to sustainable agricultural practices. A key innovative component is the development of a virtual living lab, integrating digital representations of the project’s processes to facilitate staff mobility and asynchronous learning, ensuring knowledge sustainability and the continued application of developed solutions beyond the project's duration. By establishing a reliable and science-based approach for the safe upcycling of citrus loss streams, CIRCUIT-FOOD contributes to reducing food loss while promoting innovation in functional food development.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
