EUROPEAN SOFTWARE PROCESS IMPROVEMENT TRAINING INITIATIVE

Objective

The main objective of the ESPITI project has been to maximise the benefits of improvement of the software process in Europe through training. More specifically, the following goals were set:

- Identify the true needs of industry
- Increase the level of awareness of the benefits of ISO9000
- Facilitate the certification process through training
- Promote the use of software process assessment and improvement techniques
- Encourage information exchange across country boundaries

ACTIONS

A major user survey was carried out at the start of the project in order to determine the needs of European Industry in the area of quality systems and process improvement for software producing units. Over 70 000 questionnaires were mailed with over 3800 replies received. The organisations responsible for implementing ESPITI in the 17 different European countries have used the results to fine-tune their initial activity plans to align with these needs. ESPITI has been delivered to European Industry primarily in the form of a program of awareness events, training events and workgroup meetings. In all, over 1100 events were originally planned. It was expected that at least 80% of participants would rate the events good or better.

EXPECTED IMPACT AND EXPERIENCE

It is now expected that by the end of the project, more than 1290 events will have been staged under the ESPITI project. More than 15 000 individuals from 8000 companies will have participated in these events. Currently, on average, more than 90% of participants are rating events good or better. In order to gauge the impact of the ESPITI project on participating companies' software processes, a sample of participants will be polled at the end of the project. One of the issues highlighted by the user survey has been low training budgets within companies - between 3 and 5 days per person per year. In order to overcome this problem, new approaches to training have been developed under ESPITI which are more cost effective and targeted specifically to SME's.
