Objetivo Advances in solid-state lasers and coherent nonlinear optical sources provide powerful tools for an increasingly broad range of applications. The Advanced Solid-State Photonics (ASSP) topical meeting now includes anything that could impact the development of coherent solid-state sources from concepts and basic materials research, to new emerging devices, to the advanced applications that drive the development of the technology. In order to reflect the role of European researchers in photonics, the meeting is now being held in Europe every 3-5 years (previously only in the USA). Vienna has been selected to be the venue for the 20th ASSP meeting Feb. 6-10, 2005. Based on the recent statistics, about 350 participants, including about 60 PhD students and about 100 Post-Docs, are expected. The present project is embedded in this conference with the aim to attract an increased number of mainly European students and young scientists, thus further enhancing the European impact on Photonics and this conference in particular. At the same time, the future of the photonics research in Europe can only be guaranteed if a generation of younger scientists gets access to the world-class training and gets directly involved into the international research. The ASSP conference provides a number of tools for this purpose, including the plenary, regular, and poster sessions, table-top exhibit, short courses, industrial mini-symposia and complimentary skills workshops. The Community support for this meeting will ensure a broad representation by the young European researchers in this specific community. The overall organisation of the ASSP conference is being carried out by the Optical Society of America. TU Vienna, represented by the two organisational units, the EU Research Management Unit and the Photonics Institute, will manage all the issues connected with the present project.
