The HOMESTEAD project demonstrates to both consumers and sales organizations an effective home shopping solution based on standard multimedia technologies. The HOMESTEAD system comprises software for retailers to compile electronic catalogues efficiently, and communication links between the retailer, the host computer and the consumer established when the system is implemented. HOMESTEAD uses the existing base of consumer technology and provides a secure, platform-independent solution which runs either on Windows 95 or CD-i. A hybrid approach to home shopping is utilized here: both on-line transaction methods and compact disc read only memory (CDROM) technology are used. Compact discs (CD) allow retailers to distribute sales and marketing information widely, which can then be consulted off-line by the consumer. Both interactive linear browsers (ILB) and customer interaction data (CID) are included in the system. Orders are placed and transactions are completed on-line, either by direct dial or via the Internet. Up-to-date information about new products and prices can also be issued using this technology.
