Exploitable results

In contrast to standard stereo techniques which allow only for 1-dimensional placing, the Auditory Virtual Environment Demonstrator (AVED) allows 3-dimensional 'pictures' of the building's space. The properties of this virtual space can be modified to adjust the acoustical attributes and up to 4 sound sources can be moved as required inside the virtual environment. Room acoustical effects are calculated from the geometry of the virtual environment in real time. The system uses an off the shelf head tracking device and workstation, and purpose built digital processing hardware. The maximum update rate is 80 Hz with a latency period of about 60 ms. By introducing an auditory component, the SCATIS project is adding a further dimension which will heighten the entertainment value of virtual reality, and also provide a valuable aid for design, for instance allowing architects to assess the acoustic properties of buildings during the design process. Furthermore, there are many application possibilities in information technology eg simulators, auditory displays in control and surveillance applications, or multi-user teleconferencing systems.
