Ubiquitous in-line mass spectroscopy for industrial process monitoring and optimization with sustainable impacts

Project description

Ubiquitous in-line mass spectroscopy for a more sustainable world

Denmark-based company Spectro Inlets is working on the first mass spectrometer for use in industries relying on chemical processing. The EU-funded UBISpec project will help the company commercialise the so-called Spectro Inlets liquid gas analyser (SI-LGA), which will help various industries such as food and beverage, pharmaceuticals and biogas-based energy generation obtain in-line, real-time measurement and optimisation of process-critical chemical reactions. Use of SI-LGA could cut annual greenhouse gas emissions by 2.3 million tCO2 and boost production by 5 %–15 %. Moreover, SI-LGA is value added and will have a positive impact on company staff and revenue by 2027.

Objective

Spectro Inlets aims to commercialise the first mass-spectrometer (MS) to be used as an integral part of chemical-process based industries. The Spectro Inlets liquid gas analyser (SI-LGA) enables for the first time in-line, real-time measurement and optimisation of process-critical chemical reactions. Target industries include biogas-based energy generation, wastewater treatment, food & beverage production, and pharma, representing an 1.5B opportunity for Spectro Inlets. Deploying SI-LGA to biogas monitoring will reduce greenhouse gas emission by 2,300,000 tCO2 /year in Europe and increase the production yield in 5-15%. The technology enabler is a patented microchip inlet system. The objective of the UbiSpec project is to optimise, demonstrate and certify SI-LGA, from already achieved TRL6 prototypes to TRL9 and full commercialisation in the Biogas sector. In 5 years from project launch, SI-LGA will represent 85% of our companys 55m revenues and responsible for 60 new employees.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
