Project description
Brain-inspired processing and pattern recognition with negligible energy consumption
In an age of ever-increasing numbers of sensors and continuous data acquisition and processing, energy efficiency is becoming one of the greatest challenges to sustainable ICT, particularly in small consumer devices often running on portable batteries. The Dutch spin-off Innatera has developed an ‘always-on’, spiking neural processor (SNP) family that brings advanced brain-inspired signal processing closer to the sensors, enabling ultra-low power dissipation and ultra-fast processing speeds. Leveraging the innate functionality of spiking neural networks, the SNP chips provide neuromorphic pattern recognition for high-tech, low-power, latency-critical applications. The EIC-funded Spiking Neural Processor project will enable the team to optimise and scale up the technology.
Objective
Over the last 5 years, the number of devices equipped with sensors has grown exponentially reaching 4 billion per year. In battery-powered devices such as phones, smartwatches, wireless earphones, & video doorbells, energy-efficient processing of the complex, continuous data coming out of multiple sensors is a critical problem.
Innatera is a trailblazing semiconductor spin-off of the TU Delft & is bringing to the market neural processors. Our Spiking Neural Processor (SNP) is inspired by the way neurons function in our brain using a neural network with an inherent notion of time.
At the sensor edge, SNP can deliver always-on pattern recognition functionalities in power & latency-sensitive applications via an innovative programmable architecture. It enables application-specific customers to implement immediately ready-to-use high-performance pattern recognition. SNP delivers market-leading differentiation with faster time-to-market & reduced development effort.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
