Minimally invasive reliAble Glucose monitoring in Intensive Care

Project description

A tiny transcatheter glucose sensor for intensive care

Critically ill patients in intensive care unit (ICUs) often present with high blood glucose levels which is associated with poor outcome. Despite extensive efforts, optimal glycemic control is difficult, as there is no means available for continuous glucose monitoring. Funded by the European Innovation Council, the MAGIC project brings forward a patented technology that offers real-time monitoring of glucose in ICU patients. The technology employs a tiny glucose sensor that can be incorporated through any arterial catheter without disrupting its use. As preliminary results are very encouraging, the MAGIC project aims to validate the clinical performance of the glucose sensor in the ICU setting and seek regulatory approval. Ultimately, the sensor has the potential to save lives and reduce healthcare costs.

Objective

"9 of 10 intensive care unit (ICU) patients get elevated glucose levels because of their critical illness. Clinical trials prove that better glucose control could save thousands of lives and millions of euros for hospitals. Surprisingly, no continuous glucose monitor (CGM) is available for ICU patients, as solutions developed for diabetics don't work in the ICU.

GlucoSet has a novel, patented technology for glucose monitoring. This enables - for the first time - reliable, minimally invasive, real-time monitoring of glucose in ICU patients. 4 of 5 EU ICU physicians say our product would be ""very valuable"" in their ICU and believe it will improve outcomes in their ICU. 9 of 10 ICU managers say they are willing to pay for use in a large share of their patients on launch.

A demo version of the product has been tested in patients with excellent results (TRL6). This project aims to make the product ready for CE-mark (TRL8) in 25 months, then validate clinical benefits, and scale up (TRL9)."

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

GLUCOSET AS
Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
