Project description
Revolutionary second-life battery energy storage solution
Battery technologies have gained significant importance due to the increasing demand for electric vehicles and renewable energy sources such as solar panels. In response to this need, innovation is essential. Funded by the European Innovation Council, the iBEMS-SeLiBat project will focus on developing and introducing a revolutionary second-life battery energy storage system that incorporates a state-of-the-art battery energy management system. This innovative solution leverages data collected by the energy management system to create digital twins and acquire critical insights. This data-driven approach is essential to extending the lifetime of the battery and predictive maintenance. The ultimate goal of the project is to increase the technology readiness level of the system from 5 to 8, making it market-ready.
Objective
Octave’s product consists of a second-life battery energy storage system equipped with Octave’s cutting-edge battery and energy management technology. The novel technology relies on a deep integration of the battery management system and the energy management system. It makes the raw battery cell measurements available for optimisation of the battery system’s charging strategy. The data are sent to Octave’s battery cloud, where it is used in advanced machine learning methods and digital twins of the cells are created to extract useful insights.
This innovative technology opens up a range of improvements in the operation of the system such as optimal control, extended lifetime, improved monitoring and enables predictive maintenance. It is particularly useful for second-life battery storage.
The goal of this project is to bring Octave’s product to the market by lifting the technological readiness from TRL 5 to 8 and prepare the go to market via the blended finance modality.
