Offshore renewable and clean desalination of sea water

Project description

A wave-powered desalination solution

Coastal areas without large infrastructure investment need alternative desalination solutions to the existing ones to obtain freshwater. The EIC-funded ReWater project proposes a wave-powered desalination solution, the Desalinator, developed by the Ocean Oasis (Norway) start-up, which mitigates the impact of seawater desalination. The solution reduces CO2 emissions and power consumption to zero. The units can be installed between 1 and 5 km from shore, without the need for any external power supply, and safely dispose of the brine without affecting the marine ecosystem. Each Desalinator is designed for a lifetime of 25 years.

Objective

Ocean Oasis (Norway) is a start-up focused on offering a clean alternative to current desalination solutions, making freshwater more available in coastal areas without large infrastructure investments. Our wave-powered desalination solution, Desalinator, will mitigate the impact of seawater desalination by reducing CO2 emissions and power consumption to zero. Our units can be installed between 1 and 5 km from shore without requiring any external power supply and safely disposing the brine without affecting the marine ecosystem. Each Desalinator is designed for a lifetime of 25 years, and our business model consists of long-term (>15 years) freshwater supply contracts with our customers, retaining the ownership of the buoys. Our goal is to reach 572 units operating by 2030 with an annual production of 150 million m3 in areas where water is scarce.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
