Project description
Digital soil characterisation tools based on genetic inverse analysis
Ground conditions are a key source of uncertainty in construction projects, resulting in adverse effects on safety, cost and carbon footprint due to over-dimensioning. To address geotechnical uncertainty, the Spanish company SAALG GEOMECHANICS has created DAARWIN, a cloud-based digital platform based on an adaptive genetic algorithm using real time back analysis to provide a more accurate representation of real soil behaviour. The European Innovation Council-funded GEORGIA project will enable the company to enhance the development and commercialisation of DAARWIN. The platform will let companies and organisations detect instabilities in advance, enhance decision making and minimise materials consumption and CO2 emissions, enhancing the safety, sustainability and profitability of the construction sector.
Objective
Mainly funded by taxpayers' money, the construction industry has a poor track record in sustainability, efficiency and safety, which are in many cases linked to the lack of understanding of ground behaviour. The construction industry is responsible for 11% of global carbon emissions from construction embodied carbon, 9 out of 10 projects experience cost overruns (+45% of project cost) and 60,000 fatal accidents in construction yearly. Geotechnical uncertainty translates to over-designs, unforeseen events, and impacts overall safety.
GEORGIA responds to the opportunity to reshape the Capital Infrastructure and Large Building Projects market by introducing and consolidating the concept of interactive design. GEORGIA will enhance the development and commercialization of DAARWIN as the pioneer end-to-end digital platform based on Adaptive Genetic Algorithm to address the ground uncertainty problem and reduce carbon footprint, cost overruns and increase the safety of construction projects.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
