Project description
Redirecting e-commerce to support local retailers and sustainability
Many local retailers have had difficulty competing with large online platforms, leading to over 100 000 retail closures in the EU between 2016 and 2018. To make matters worse, some of these e-commerce giants leave a large carbon footprint that is not always transparent. Funded by the European Innovation Council, the SmartOnlineSalesRedirectionPlatform project aims to scale up its innovative AI-based retail platform, which redirects online consumer product searches to local retailers. When the requested product is locally available, a browser plug-in will automatically provide details of local shops that carry the item. This will give consumers the choice to back local businesses and do something good for fellow citizens and the environment.
Objective
Large online platforms bring increasing difficulties for retailers to attract end users to local offerings. Between 2016 & 2018 122,677 retail businesses were closed in the EU. City centres start to extinct, local retail loses market shares. To stop these trends & help retailers in regaining a wide reach, we built the first self-learning AI platform for retailers. The core technology is a browser plug-in for web-browsers. When an end user searches for a product on a shopping platform, e.g. Amazon, and opens a product site, alocalo’s search algorithm identifies the displayed product and suggests local retailers who provide the searched article. Within less than 1s the end user gets the recommendation for the trader together with the local shop’s name, distance to the shop, address & contact data. The plug-in shows the availability of the searched product & end users are directed to the retailer’s web shop to order online (guaranteed delivery next day) or buy it locally.
