Project description
Turning sunlight into seafood
In a quest to enhance food security and bolster climate resilience, Blue Planet Ecosystems (BPE) is leading the way with an ambitious vision. They have undertaken the challenge of reducing our dependence on the ocean for animal protein production. With the EIC-funded LARA project, they will transform this vision into reality. LARA aims to harness the power of sunlight to cultivate seafood, decoupling it from traditional marine ecosystems. By establishing large-scale, autonomous aquaculture systems in arid deserts and bustling urban centres, BPE envisions a future where cities and entire countries can access sustainable protein sources without harming the environment. This innovative initiative marks a significant leap towards a more secure and resilient global food supply chain.
Objective
In order to improve food security and climate resilience, Blue Planet Ecosystems (BPE) aims to decouple the production of animal protein from the ocean by turning sunlight into seafood. It is the companies vision is to establish large-scale, autonomous aquaculture operations in deserts and urban environments with no environmental impact on a scale that is able to feed cities and countries.
