Project description
Affordable quantum processor leveraging 3D technology democratises quantum computing
Quantum computing has transitioned from a laboratory curiosity to an emerging industry. However, quantum processing units are scarce. This forces quantum computer integrators to either raise enormous capital and build their own quantum processing units or rely on a university lab for research. Netherlands-based company QuantWare B.V. aims to become the ‘Intel of quantum computing’ by providing easy-to-use, powerful and affordable quantum processors to organisations globally. The company has patented 3D technology that directs connections vertically, which enables the scaling of superconducting quantum processors to thousands of qubits. The EIC-funded DEMOQC project will further advance the 3D architecture, enabling QuantWare’s current quantum processors with 64 fully controllable qubits to be scaled to over 1 000 qubits.
Objective
Quantum computing is moving from a research field to an emerging industry. But quantum computer integrators face a critical bottleneck: quantum processing units (QPUs) are exceedingly scarce. If a team of innovators envisions a new type of quantum computer, they have two main options. They can either raise enormous capital and build their own QPUs or rely on a university lab for support. This situation reinforces the dominance of incumbent tech giants and stifles innovation when the field needs it the most.
We reduce the capital intensity of the field by bringing customizable, scalable, and affordable QPUs to the market. We achieve this by combining three proprietary technologies: parameterized designs, high-yield fabrication, and scalable 3D architecture. We have demonstrated our ability to deliver fully packaged QPUs in less than 30 days to our customers. This project will advance our 3D architecture from prototype to product and offer our customers modular 1000+ qubit QPUs.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
