Stabilis – Providing relief for tremor patients

Project description

New solution for hand tremors

Holding a cup of coffee, eating with a spoon, or writing a note are everyday tasks that can be a struggle for millions of people with hand tremors. Tremors are common in conditions like Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and essential tremor, making simple movements shaky and unpredictable. This can lead to frustration and embarrassment, forcing people to rely on others or avoid social situations. Some treatments exist, but they often come with strong side effects or are not effective. In this context, the EIC-funded STABILIS project is creating a better solution. Developed by STIL, the Stabilis orthosis is a lightweight, wearable device that reduces tremors. It helps people regain control of their hands, without the downsides of medication.

Objective

Millions of people worldwide have trouble with involuntary shaking hands. These shakes are called tremors, commonly seen in Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, and Essential Tremor. Tremors lead to a lot of frustration. Not only does it make eating and drinking difficult, or impossible, but people are often ashamed. Current treatments to suppress tremors are often inefficient and lead to heavy side effects. There is a need for a new solution. STIL is developing a medical device that will enable people with tremors to return to their activities of daily living. The STIL anti-tremor orthosis (called Stabilis) uses technology that suppresses the tremor but still allows voluntary movement. With its lightweight and ergonomic design, patients can conveniently wear the device when they need it, without the side effects that medication would give. It is STIL’s mission to provide freedom to people who suffer from tremors, allowing them to comfortably live life.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
