Objective
The basic objective of this project is to scale up for industrial use, the innovative results from a BRITE-EURAM Project. 'The residual service life of reinforced concrete structures.' The demand for this has come from end-users (eight are partners in this project). The approach is to work from best available science to produce a practical engineering approach to assessment, in user-friendly terms, covering corrosion, frost action, ASR and other expansive actions. No validated manual exists, and it is estimated that completion of this project will reduce unnecessary expenditure on repairs by 10-20 % within 3-5 years.
Specific objectives are - to calibrate the methodology against a wide range of structures. - to give clear guidance on the application of the technology, with the emphasis on structural assessment, and on action plans for owners. - to produce, publish and promote a fully validated User Manual. - to outline how the technology might be extended to prestressed concrete.
Five steps are foreseen :
- Improvement and updating of the existing draft manual.
- Application to a wide range of case studies.
- Completion of the final manual.
- Complementary guideline documents for specific applications.
- Promotion and promulgation of the results throughout the community.
The major deliverable is the validated User Manual, compatible with relevant European Codes and Standards together with complementary guideline documents, relevant to particular structures (buildings, bridges, dams, etc.), based on the output from the case studies. Each case study will also be a deliverable plus a deliverable on how to apply the technology to prestressed concrete.
For promotion and publicity, community-wide workshops are planned, plus training courses in individual countries. Supporting papers will be published and wide use of IT (e.g. CD-ROM, Internet).
