Objective
The VEGA project aims to establish an information infrastructure which will support the technical and business operations of Virtual Enterprises. Groupware tools and distributed architectures will be developed in compliance with product data technology standardisation activities in line with the current trends adopted by international industrial groupware specifications coming for example from the Object Management Group.
The VEGA project will develop a methodology for the distribution of systems and achieve the integration expected by end users by following two complementary routes. The approaches and developments resulting from a number of ESPRIT projects will be extended and the strategy for application integration by the distribution of a concurrent access to STEP databases will be explored to its ultimate limits. The second route will involve designing a COrba Access to STep models (COAST) infrastructure to support, as a natural mechanism, the distribution of product data by means of an updated object broker technology.
VEGA will focus on a business case where these technologies could bring more benefits than in the manufacturing sectors. The Large Scale Engineering industry (20% of the GNP of EC nations) is a fragmented industry where the business relationships last only for the duration of the projects. This is a typical case of Virtual Enterprise with an increased world-wide competition and special threats coming from low wages areas. VEGA will establish a generic backbone for a new communication era based on the distribution of product model data.
