Objective The main objective of the Early Stage Training in the Cardiovascular Research Institute Maastricht (CARIM) is to train early stage researchers in cardiovascular sciences in a European and multidisciplinary perspective. The central hypothesis underlying the training programme is that cardiovascular diseases are the result of an interaction between genetic and environmental risk factors acting upon a system that as a part of the ageing process looses its adaptive potential. To address this hypothesis the fellows will perform research in the following closely related areas:- thrombosis and haemostasis;- the functioning of the normal and failing heart and on the possibilities for detecting and treating high risk cardiac patients (cardiac function and failure);- vascular biology and medicine of both large and small vessels. The project will train 7 early stage researchers in the field of cardiovascular diseases which are expected to lead towards 7 PhD degrees. The fellows will be trained by Universiteit Maastricht, CARIM.The training programme builds on the strength and infrastructure of CARIM's research program, which includes the basic science infrastructure of the Universiteit Maastricht, CARIM and the infrastructure for clinical research of the University Hospital Maastricht. Fellows will study and work in a cutting edge and international research environment. They will be exposed to both a basic laboratory and clinical setting of cardiovascular research. In addition, available expertise and equipment in the field of advanced biomedical engineering at the Eindhoven University of Technology will be integrated into the training programme.
