Cardiovascular Damage and Repair II

Final Activity Report Summary - CADRE II (Cardiovascular damage and repair II)

A total of seven PhD students were trained in this project. They worked on different research projects within the total framework of the Cadiovascular Research Institute Maastricht. Furthermore, they received a comprehensive training programme in cardiovascular biology and medicine.

The results of the seven research projects were as follows:

1. the cardiac matricellular protein thrombospondin was proved to play an important role in the progression to heart failure
2. mechanisms of perpetuation of atrial fibrillation in chronically dilated atria were revealed
3. the role of notch signalling in collateral blood vessel formation was revealed
4. an unexpected pro-atherogenic effect of interferon-beta, despite its anti-inflammatory properties, was found
5. two types of transgenic mice were developed with pro-thrombotic and anti-thrombotic phenotypes
6. the role of phosphoinositide 3-kinase in thrombus formation was established
7. the contribution of collagen-adherent fibrogen to platelet adhesion under static and flow conditions in thrombus formation was shown.
