4DVideo: 4D spatio-temporal modeling of real-world events from video streams

Final Report Summary - 4DVIDEO (4DVideo: 4D spatio-temporal modeling of real-world events from video streams)

4DVIDEO enables interactively re-living events from videos recorded with mobile devices: for instance, real-world footage captured on hand held cameras by Citizen-journalists or members of the audience. The amount and the availability of this kind of footage has been increasing rapidly in the last decade, thanks to the widespread usage of affordable consumer devices equipped with video-cameras, such as mobile phones, and thanks to video-sharing websites, such as YouTube, which collects these videos and shares them among the Internet users. Organizing these video collections is difficult and there are many possible ways a user or a production editor may want to navigate them. The typical way of playing them in series or jump cutting between them may not convey the important motion and context of the event.

4DVIDEO explored the possibility of interactively navigating these video collections in both space and time, providing to the user an immersive and personalized experience of the event which does not limit his viewpoint to fixed positions decided by a director during the playback. Unlike the typical jump cut between videos, commonly used by the directors in television shows and movies, we chose to use smooth spatial transitions which seamlessly change the user viewpoint of the event providing sufficient visual hints to maintain his sense of orientation and surroundings.
