FIPSOC, standing for Field Programmable System on a Chip, is a family of general-purpose field programmable integrated circuits including an SRAM-based FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array), an FPAA (Field Programmable Analog Array), and a microcontroller, with a proprietary user-friendly CAD flow, running on a WindowsTM-based PC, for design entry, technology mapping, placement and routing, device programming, hardware and software on-chip emulation, and real time internal signal monitoring. The main application paradigm of the chip is industrial control, for which the 8051 microcontroller has become the de facto standard. Typical users from a vast segment of the industry can cut the increasing NRE costs and development cycles incurred by conventional mixed-signal ASICs using FIPSOC chips thanks to its on-field programmability. The chip is intended to be used for system prototyping and low to medium volume production of applications for which a fast time to market is essential or where a fast dynamic reconfiguration of parts of the system is needed.
