Nuclear structure studies of neutron-deficient nuclei in light Pb region using radioactive ion beams

Objectif

It is proposed that an IEF Fellow should work at the CERN-ISOLDE laboratory for pioneering nuclear physics experiments utilizing heavy radioactive beam from the REX-ISOLDE post-accelerator. The nuclear structure of heavy neutron-deficient nuclei will be studied via Coulomb excitation employing the novel MINIBALL gamma-ray detector array and the CD particle detector system. The Fellow will be responsible for the upgrade of the REX-ISOLDE facility and organizing work for highly international experiments. To date, the proposed Fellow has worked at leading stable ion beam facility in Jyväskylä, Finland and in the nuclear structure research group in the University of Liverpool. His responsibilities has involved ion-beam and instrument developments and a large international project for in-beam tagging studies of exotic heavy nuclei. Recently, he has put effort for the design and construction of the SAGE spectrometer, which allows simultaneous in-beam electron and gamma-ray cross-coincidence measurements of high efficiency. The proposed project with radioactive ion beams at ISOLDE will represent an ideal step forward in studies of these nuclei and will improve the professional maturity and independence as a physicist. Such researchers are needed in the future RIB facilities in Europe and all over the world.
