Objetivo
Present engineering practice is changing as companies are forced to increase their overall effectiveness, level of co-operation, flexibility and response time to the customer, while at the same time product complexity is constantly increasing. To overcome those challenges enterprises need to:
- enhance the re-use of engineering knowledge (internal and external);
- foster a change in culture, from competition to cooperation.
In response to these challenges, a group of European organisations has established the Global Engineering Network (GEN) initiative in order to foster the use of networks opening up world-wide markets for users and suppliers of engineering products and services. The relevance of GEN has been recognised by the European Information Technology Industry Round Table (E.I.T.I.R.T.) as a priority activity in the context of collaborative working and GEN is one of the major pilot projects in the frame of the 'Global Marketplace of SMEs' project launched by the G7 countries.
The objective of GENIAL is to contribute substantially to this vision by establishing a Common Semantic Infrastructure for GEN. This would enable enterprises from different engineering sectors to combine their knowledge with engineering knowledge accessed on-line and world-wide via GEN. GENIAL will therefore provide:
- a semantic framework for the systematisation of engineering knowledge which enables the structuring, classification and labelling of previously disjointed information into GEN;
- a set of toolkits for acquisition, retrieval and presentation of engineering knowledge;
- an infrastructure for enterprise knowledge capture, sharing, use and maintenance.
GENIAL will build on top of a number of currently available technologies and available standards to speed up development,to limit costs and to ensure maximum take-up of existing tools by users. GENIAL results will be validated in industrial pilots in construction, mechanical and electronic engineering.
The project is presented by leading members of the GEN initiative and reflects a representative cross-section of the participants in GEN: users and suppliers of engineering knowledge, technology providers and value-added service providers. Technology suppliers together with the service providers are fully committed to deploy and exploit GENIAL technology. Awareness raising and information dissemination of results will be carried out via a user forum which will be part of the project and open to any end user interested in GENIAL.
