In response to the massively changing requirements in the engineering area, a group of European companies and organizations has established the Global Engineering Networking (GEN) Initiative. GEN fosters the use of networks opening up world-wide markets for users and suppliers of engineering products and services. It is supported by various national and European projects of which GENIAL is one of the most ambitious. The GENIAL project involves the development of a semantic infrastructure for intelligent access to existing company information and services. Key components of the infrastructure allow the user to acquire, migrate, publish, search, present, and administer information or services equally in an internal network of companies or Value-Added Service Providers (Intranet) as well as a global network (Extranet, Internet). Although applicable for all domains, the complex requirements from the engineering domains building construction, electronics, and mechanics drive the development. The GENIAL infrastructure enables intelligent access to engineering information and services. GENIAL opens business perspectives for the following roles of users: owners of content (engineering information and services) gain an innovative way of publishing their data to several customers; end-users get a new way to efficiently and precisely access engineering information and even use this information in an integrated way within existing applications (eg computer aided design, CAD, systems); value-added service providers (as a company division or own company) install the GEN software for intelligent access to engineering information and services; application integrators build in GENIAL functionality into existing applications (eg into a CAD system which enables you to search for information and then use the data in your CAD system); technology providers realize GEN software to acquire, migrate, publish, search, present, and administer information or services or develop value-added services; optionally a controller can be added if many service providers decide to connect themselves and make their content mutually accessible to their customers.
