LOST AND SURVIVED CERAMIC TRADITIONS IN THE WESTERN MEDITERRANEAN: The Sardinian Case

Final Report Summary - CETRAWEM (Lost and Survived Ceramic Traditions in the Western Mediterranean: The Sardinian Case)

Brief summary of the project aims, objectives and milestones:

CETRAWEM: (-Look at logos in attachment) involved a complete archaeological, archaeometrical, ethnoarchaeological and ethnoarchaeometrical characterisation of LRCW's, taking as a study case Sardinia. This proposal, finally, aimed to create a holistic methodological approach and to construct a Digital Geological Information System (Geo-GIS). The specific methodology the expected outcomes (aims and milestones) and the time schedule. The holistic evaluation of the data is finished, all results have been interpreted some already presented in symposiums and conferences other published or submitted to publishing (look at the deliverables of this report) and others that will be published in the near future according to a specific schedule that has been programmed. Originally only one monograph was scheduled as one of the outcomes of the project. However, we decided to write two monographs. The fist one will be of general diffusion on an open access publication (Ilion Books) and will deal only with the recollected ethnoarchaeological information including the oral testimonies of the potters and the photographic material that we produced and the second in the near future will be a printed monograph of the scientific work only. One of the most important, however, scientific and social impact of the project is the construction of a specific website. http://www.lrcw. net that is the official website of CETRAWEM and of other two correlated projects (LRCWMED and PROFOLANT). http://www.lrcw. net is, in fact, a virtual space of collaboration between interested scientists and the main participants of these three projects where all of us can share information and work with the uploaded data online o chat with each other solving specific problems. The digital library is of a free access to wide public. However the digital data base or the GEO-GIS which is still under construction will be limited to scientists that wish to register as partners.
a) Archaeological study cases: Regarding to Nora the interpretation of the data leads to the conclusion that most of the analysed materials correspond to a single local and/or regional production (only with 2 exceptions). At Santa Eulalia the study shows the presence of well-known Mediterranean Fabrics. Finally, the results obtained for San Salvatore di Cabras show important compositional differences indicating significant variation of the raw materials used for two kind of different ceramic material.
b) Ethnoarchaeological study cases: Important information has been delivered from the ethnoarchaeological study and specially the one obtained by fieldwork. The interviews and the audiovisual documentation of a tradition that is disappearing in Sardinia soon will be the only mean to remember the testimonies of the last living potters producing traditional pottery. The terracotta production in Sardinia involves the manufacture of all kind of handmade utilitarian object. The technological processes are the same for all the study cases.
WP3 and WP4 permitted the full chemical, mineralogical and petrographical characterisation of the pottery of all the studied workshops and the identification, localisation of the raw materials used for these productions. The comparison of the clays and pottery and leaded to some interesting observation also from archaeometric point of view
