Single Particle Cryo-Electron Microscopy and Biophysical Characterization of Transient Receptor Potential Vanilloid 2 channel: a Three-Dimensional Structure Characterization of a Membrane Nociceptor

Final Report Summary - PAIN_TRPV2 (Single particle cryo-electron microscopy and biophysical characterization ...: A three-dimensional structure characterization of a membrane nociceptor)

The training of fellows and transfer of knowledge are essential tools for society. In this now finalised project, Europe has consolidated successfully the training of a future leader in research and the transfer of knowledge towards Europe between two prestigious institutions, such as Harvard University and Autonomous University of Barcelona and the establishment of a mutually beneficial collaboration between the United States (US) and Europe. Excitingly, the international outgoing fellowship (IOF) project has initiated a scientific collaboration between institutions, still ongoing, of extreme importance for the potential scientific and social outcome.

Scientifically, the training achieved involves multidisciplinary aspects ranging from neurosciences to structural biology, including high-throughput biotechnology processes and computational biology. Getting into specifics, the project has dealt successfully with breaking barriers for the expression and purification of eukaryote membrane proteins for low-to-high resolution structural biology, indispensable tool for drug design-based approaches leading towards therapeutics of diseases related to human physiological membrane receptors, transporters and channels.

Currently, the representation in scientific publications is already high in number and quality and several more manuscripts are in preparation. The results have been disseminated in international and national scientific conferences and workshops and the impact of Marie Curie actions has been explicitly acknowledged in social media. Technological and scientific aspects of the project have been already included within undergraduate teaching lectures and a 'Marie Curie summer school' has been piloted during 2012 and it will be hopefully established for 2013.

For the fellow, the project provides a unique opportunity for establishment within the European research community, which has already started in the form of competitive fundraising to continue the research project in Spain. The researcher currently leads a group of four people embedded in the Autonomous University of Barcelona. The establishment of this research group within the European research network will contribute to the excellence and social improvement of Europe.
