Metabolomics of salicylate induced plants

Salicylate is an important signal compound in plants connected with resistance against viral and fungal infections. Little is known about the metabolic changes involved with the induction of resistance by salicylate. Metabolomics offers a novel tool to study these changes and will be helpful in increasing our understanding of the resistance mechanisms.

For this study we will use tobacco plants over-expressing microbial genes involved in the salicylate biosynthesis (patented from the host laboratory), TMV-infected plants and wild-type plants. NMR spectrometry will be used as tool to measure overall changes in the metabolome.

Eventually targeted metabolomic tools such as LC-MS, GC-MS and MS-MS will be used for a more detailed targeted metabolic profiling. This systems biology approach will help us to identify (secondary) metabolite pathways involved in resistance.
