Food and Drug Analysis, 1988-1991

Objective

Development of a European Laboratory to support the EC sectorial policies on foods, agriculture, consumer protection and custom tariffs.

Progress to end 1990

- Proposals for the collaboration agreements with DG. III (foods), DG. VI (dairy products and wine) and Consumer Protection Service (cosmetics, quality and composition of foods etc.) for the period 1992-1994 have been prepared and submitted to the interested general Directorates.

- Participation in the EC experts meetings for dairy products in order to start in the near future our collaboration. Practical laboratory work has started to determine sterols in butter oil (by capillary gas chromatography), and casein in goat's and cow's milk by capillary electrophoresis or gel isoelectric-focusing.

- Electrophoresis, optical microscopy, and enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) technique have been applied and compared for the detection of vegetal protein (soya) in meat preparations.

- Under request of the Consumer Protection Service the determination of the protein content of common wheat in durum wheat flours has been carried out using the gel isoelectric focusing technique.

- A new laboratory for microbiological control of foods and beverages has been installed; its official activity will start as soon as a collaboration agreement with an interested DG. is established.

- Sucrose added to citrus juice fruit can be quantitatively determined using the Low method based on the determination of the formed oligosaccharides. Low is trying to extend his method to wine.

Detailed description of work foreseen in 1991 (expected results)

- Concerning the dairy products in cooperation with DG VI and Member States the following laboratory activities are foreseen:

. Control of sterols in butter and vegetable fats.

. Study of the appropriate chemical indicators to evaluate the effects of heat in thermized and pasturized milks.

. Study of the fat composition of various European butters by their fatty acid and triglyceride profiles.

. Establishment of a data bank to provide information on the composition of milk fats originating from different European regions.

- Other new activities will depend on decisions and needs of the various interested DGs.
