Geometry of non-Abelian effective brane theories

Objectif

The proposed research is to apply recent ideas from mathematics and theoretical physics in a superspace setting. These ideas concern the differential geometry one encounters when dealing with extended objects rather than points. This should shed light on the long outstanding problem of the effective action of coincident branes, i.e. generalisations of Yang-Mills theories.

The use of superspace in this novel mathematical setting seems essential to achieve this. This is a completely new approach to the problem, which will have wide-reaching consequences for the very fundaments of string theory, but also for phenomenological research in cosmology and high-energy physics model building.
