Hyper-textual Film Presentation. Designing Digital Editions for the European Cinematographic Heritage

Objective

The project aims to design an international standard of scholarly film editions (comparable to the historical-critical editions of texts) in a digital format. The first step would be to present a model for a future edition project for the European film heritage, starting with a pilot DVD of Czech avant-garde film from the 1930s; I will be closely collaborating with experts from the Film School FAMU and the National Film Archive in Prague.

We aim at remodelling of the currently eclectic and unsystematic navigation of DVDs on the market (which use additive grouping of material). The idea of indexing and text as a network actually goes back to the European tradition of editing scholarship; it provides sophisticated ways of preserving texts over centuries in their authentic versions and at the same time keeps them alive in methodologically contemporary commentaries. We want to connect these traditional principles of annotation with new digital technologies (applying hypermedia principles of commentary to the linear medium of film).

These principles of indexing film shots have, so far, never been applied to critical editions of film classics. Digital editions would also facilitate and ensure a lasting quality in preservation and presentation of the many treasures o f European cinematography and film related material buried in the archives. It could help to foster a closer collaboration of researchers and archivists. A hypertext edition of film could ensure a better reception of the European film heritage in all its diversity. Truly interactive navigation would open up new ways of reception of film art, also allowing for broad access to documentary and non-fiction film material.
