Objetivo
The aim of Harmonizing the Integrated European Census Microdata (HIECM) is to contribute to the creation of the Integrated European Census Microdata research infrastructure by requesting specific support for:
(i) Database Study to develop and implement harmonized coding systems to permit intra-European comparisons across countries and time periods based on multiple rounds of population and housing censuses in at least 17 European countries, altering the existing coding system as necessary to accommodate the new samples.
(ii) Exploratory Workshop to assure the interest and cooperation of the national statistical offices; to ensure that the intra-European integration of Census Microdata is being performed according to the highest standards; to assess the progress being made by the harmonization team; and to discuss harmonization strategies for some of the most cumbersome variables such as educational attainment or activity status.
The Centre d'Estudis Demogràfics, located at the University Autonoma of Barcelona, will have the exclusive responsibility of managing and implementing this accompanying measure for a period of 36 months. HIECM builds on previous grants to create and disseminate integrated and fully documented samples of European census microdata: IPUMS-Europe funded by the National Institutes of Health of the United States of America and CIECM and DIECM projects funded by the European Commission.
The HIECM project will add value to the European database by ensuring a coding scheme that reflects census practices of European states as well as the principles and recommendations of Eurostat with regard to census concepts and nomenclatures. European practices will be better reflected if intra-European coding schemes are provided as part of the IECM dissemination strategy.
