ILLUMINATING DARK ENERGY WITH THE NEXT GENERATION OF COSMOLOGICAL REDSHIFT SURVEYS

Final Report Summary - DARKLIGHT (ILLUMINATING DARK ENERGY WITH THE NEXT GENERATION OF COSMOLOGICAL REDSHIFT SURVEYS)

With the Darklight project we have made great strides towards a quantitative understanding of our Universe using measurements of its large-scale structure from galaxy surveys. Over the five years of the project, the Darklight group has developed new ways to model and analyse the data from galaxy surveys, building a better understanding of theoretical models (necessary to account for the non-ideality of the data) and of the way galaxies trace the underlying structure. In this way, it contributed substantially to the successful exploitation of the VIPERS redshift survey at the ESO VLT. This resulted in around 60 research papers, which range from new theoretical methods, tests on state-of-the-art simulations and front-ranked measurements on unprecedented survey data. These results further confirm that General Relativity remains a good description of the experimental data, also on the largest scales that can be probed. At the same time, the progress in the analysis tools will allow forthcoming experiments to refine these tests to higher precision, while keeping systematic effects under control.
