Development of best practice, grading & transportation technology in the crustacean fishery sector

Objective

This Collective project will improve the infra-structure of our crustacean fishery sector and start the process of improving our level of innovation and exploitation of technology in relation to our global competitors. As a result, we expect to increase our share in global market by improving crustacean quality, efficiency, and reduce costs. To fulfil this objective our sector needs to innovate and develop new & cost effective production methods through the whole value chain. The main objective is therefore to reduce mortality and loss in quality after capture and to expand the market opportunities for live crustaceans.
Our idea is to design a new technical solution for grading, holding & transport of live crustaceans and to facilitate development of new protocols and systems for handling, storage & transportation of live crustaceans through the complete value chain. In order to achieve this, the following knowledge & technological capabilities will need to be developed: - enhanced understanding of specific biological requirements of specific crustacean species (Edible crab & European lobster) and the physical factors (particularly water quality) that impact onto their health, growth and survival. - enhanced understanding related to handling, storage and transportation of live crustaceans in terms of how to improve survival and quality, and hence add value to the sectors of crustacean fisheries, and in the near future aquaculture. - development of a patentable, cost effective crustacean grading unit for objective grading of such species into different qualities based on meat content. - development of a patentable transportation technology consisting of intelligent transportation boxes comprising a floodable system for flushing of the live crustacean animals.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
