Fast transhipment equipment and novel methods for RailCargo in Europe

Objective

The Project FastR'Cargo aims at developing the fastest transhipment system with the potential of a significant impact on rail innovations for 2010 and beyond. It aims at automatic loading and un-loading of standardised intermodal transport units to standardised rail wagons and trucks below active power lines and vice versa. The equipment will also allow parallel load processes. This rail innovation offering new and attractive transportation services will definitely support new rail production methods, thus contributing to the re-balancing of transport mode.

FastR'Cargo is a major step forward towards interoperability and inter-connectivity of rail and road transport at material flow, communication and security levels. The transhipment system consists of two interactive sub systems designed according to concepts of advanced automation techniques. They operate within a newly defined service track, including additional provisions for data and energy transmissions. No equivalent systems were built so far. A framework for specific rail track layouts, rail operation standards, a node-control centre and a sophisticated intra-node transport system are developed to the degree of requirements for certification process. The sub systems are developed by the team member s on the basis of existing knowledge, national and international pre-projects with the aim of delivery to the market as a turn-key installation. The project follows RAMSS supported strategies for mechatronic systems.

The consortium is built upon engineering experience of lifting systems, flexible manufacturing and management of rail innovation. Latest technologies in computer vision and other sensor systems, advanced automation systems, safe wireless communication and hardware-in-the-loop simulation will be used in the realisation of the project. Rail operators well known to the transportation industry will support the dissemination activities of the project's results.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
