Intelligent Motion Analysis - Development of a novel technology that makes quantitative measurement of musculoskeletal problems available, in the interests of physiotherapists, patients and society

Final Report Summary - IMA (Intelligent Motion Analysis - Development of a novel technology that makes quantitative measurement of musculoskeletal problems available, in the interests of physiotherapists, patients and society)

Executive Summary:
This project will provide a more accurate and low cost tool for quantitative measurement of musculoskeletal conditions, one of the most widespread and costly illnesses in society today. It will provide physiotherapists with wireless, light and easy to use measuring units that will enable them to organize their time better and perform more accurate assessment of patient condition, providing faster functional assessment and treatment for their patients; and enhancing their earnings potential.
The project is expected to present a new stage in physiotherapy and give the whole sector technical devices that will benefit themselves, their patients and society as a whole. This novel technology will offer a solution to the problem that an ageing and less mobile population presents today.

Project Context and Objectives:
To develop a low cost measurement unit and build up a commercially viable on-line data collection system, accumulating data from motion and EMG sensors deployed in PT practices and research institutions.

Project Results:
A six channel measurement unit has been developed, measuring range of motion with more accuracy than physiotherapists are generally able to do. EMG signal is in line with the best sEMG on the market. Seven measurement protocols have also been developed and validated, allowing easy assessment of shoulder and knee condition. In the shoulder the exercise protocols are abduction, scraption and internal rotation, in knee they are single leg squat, double leg squat, flexo extention and step up down. This prototype for patient functional assessment has been validated in lab and in two different PT clinics.

Potential Impact:
In this project the IMA idea has been taken forward to a prototype and the consortium has started planning for the next steps taking the prototype towards market, providing the socio-economic impact. The IMA technology is expected to give quite an added value to patient assessment, graphical presentation of results enhance communication with clients and quantitative results enhance communication with other healthcare professions.

List of Websites:
IMA public website is www.imatec.is
The web includes introduction to the project and EC funding of it, goals and objectives, partner list, promotion videos, videos showing the measurement protocols selected in the project, public meeting minutes and reports and finally project contact for those who seek further information. All this is done in both English and Spanish.
