Interfacial Engineering in Copper Carbon Nanofibre Composites (Cu-C MMCs) for high thermally loaded applications

Objective

The main objective of INTERFACE is to gain the necessary knowledge to engineer the interface of Cu matrix composites reinforced by carbon nanofibres, to develop a low-cost material with a dramatically improved thermal conductivity. For these fundamental interfacial studies a two phase concept is proposed: first, studying of interfacial properties and possibilities to modify them on flat carbon samples; and second: transfer of this knowledge to real nanofibres. With the availability of high thermal conductivity carbon nanofibres in kilogram batches and at an affordable price they have become promising candidates for the reinforcement of copper matrix composites to give a material combining high thermal conductivity and a tailored Coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), suitable for heat sink applications. However, the thermal transport across the C-Cu interface is very low and has limited the full potential of this type of materials up to now. INTERFACE aims to radical improvements in this field by: - Fundamental study of the heat transfer at the copper/carbon interface using flat model systems - Identification of possible interface modification strategies by introducing nanometre thick interlayers to optimise the mechanical and thermal interfacial properties. - Functionalisation of the surface of C nanofibres using the concepts developed in the flat model systems - Understanding the role of interfaces in the thermo-mechanical properties of Cu MMCs reinforced with C nanofibres - Preparation of composite material incorporating the interfacial functionalisation achieved. - First assessment of performance of the composite for different high thermally loaded applications

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
