EuroNanoForum 2013 Nanotechnology Innovation: From research to commercialisation – the bridge to Horizon2020

Final Report Summary - ENF 2013 (EuroNanoForum 2013 Nanotechnology Innovation: From research to commercialisation – the bridge to Horizon2020)

Executive Summary:

EuroNanoForum 2013 (ENF 2013), the sixth and latest in this series of bi-ennial conferences, was held in Dublin this year. The very successful growth of this major conference was again sustained. Approximately 1500 delegates from almost 60 countries ensured that ENF2013 was the biggest, best-organised and best-supported such conference to date.

Presentations, workshops, exhibitions, poster displays and competitions over three days demonstrated convincingly the importance of nanotechnology in ensuring that Europe retains a foothold at the very forefront of global manufacturing. Indeed, the importance of nanotechnology and nanosciences as a key enabling technology was a fundamental topic which repeatedly emerged during the course of the three days. The importance of international cooperation, including extending the boundaries of such cooperation well beyond the EU borders, was repeatedly emphasised and highlighted by all key players and was reflected in the committed participation of so many delegates from beyond those borders. The enthusiastic participation of so many delegates in the brokerage sessions demonstrated a very real willingness on the part of those delegates to establish new collaborations.

The event programme featured updates on the latest developments in nanotechnology from many leading research centres and provided practical information on industrial applications from European industrial nanotechnology leaders. Inevitably, due to its timing at the end of the Irish EU presidency, the relevance and importance of Horizon 2020 (Europe’s new Framework Programme for Research and Innovation) was repeatedly addressed. Hopes were expressed that the projected growth of this Programme and the strategic positioning of nanotechnologies within that Programme, would remain as a characteristic of the Industrial Technologies element of the Programme.

Throughout the conference, the need to focus on bringing nanotech products to market has been emphasised. This needs to be matched with a programme of communication to ensure that the public is aware of the contribution and benefits of nanotechnologies and is also reassured that the contribution is safe and contributes to the safety of citizens. The conference has also addressed other areas where nanotechnology can be applied and emphasised how businesses need to move with the times and need to redirect their attention towards transformation into new areas.

One of the key outcomes was the acknowledgement that creating ideas is not enough to drive the European Economy. A network of communication between academia and industry is vital in commercialising new key enabling technologies (KETs). This will bring more nano-product related jobs and patents back to Europe to complement the knowledge-creation here. The need for an integrated strategy for KETs development is vital. Not only is it important to perform the basic research, but an innovative output product must be created. Integration between academia, SMEs and industry will allow these innovations to be commercialised and then produced on a large industrial scale for economic growth and job creation. The emphasis on KETs and public private partnerships within Horizon 2020 is the key strategy for economic growth and job creation.

Finally, the concept of the ‘Valley of Death’ between research and successful commercialisation was repeatedly discussed and debated. Accelerating the time taken to bring potential discoveries to the marketplace is one of the key approaches to try to bridge this ubiquitous pitfall.

Project Context and Objectives:

EuroNanoForum 2013 (ENF2013) took place over 3 days from June 18-20 in Dublin, Ireland. This Forum included Europe’s most prestigious Nanotechnology conference and also show-cased Europe’s largest presentation to date of Nano activities and involvements. The Forum, organised by Enterprise Ireland and Spinverse and funded by the EC's DG Research and Innovation, was held at the Convention Centre Dublin and was the most significant single event of the Irish EU Presidency.

A total of 3 plenary and 15 general conference sessions on Days 1 and 2 were followed by 20 open workshop sessions on 12 topics during Day 3. A number of further pre-arranged closed workshop sessions were also organised to cover related matters. Throughout the three days, Nanotech Europe Exhibition presented over 50 stands, projects and exhibits. The Exhibition Hall was also the venue on Day 1 of the Forum for the NanoNet Ireland Showcase which presented the expertise and services available in Ireland. In addition, almost 300 posters dealing with a broad range of nanotech projects, services and supporting organisations were displayed throughout the Forum around the perimeter of the exhibition area. This area also served as the principle networking and refreshment forum for all delegates on each of the days.

Additional parallel programmes included the finals of the Intel Business Challenge Europe, a Brokerage event, the Magical Materials Exhibition, a Nano Art exhibition and a Nano pub crawl.

Approximately 1500 registrations were received for ENF2013 with visitors travelling from 57 countries in addition to many delegates from Ireland.

A Welcome Reception for all delegates was held in the Forum on the evening of Day 1. A Gala Dinner on the evening of Day 2 was attended by about 900 delegates. Entertainment during the dinner was provided by The Rhythm Corporation with Robbie Harris acting as MC for the event. A video message of encouragement and thanks to all participants was relayed from U2’s The Edge in New York, emphasising the critical importance of research and innovation for bettering the future for millions of the world’s population, notably cancer and other health related sufferers. The particularly promising role of nanotechnology and nanoscience was emphasised.

During the Gala Dinner, the final judging of the 16 leading posters was announced, with the first prize going to Burcu Saner Okan of Sabanci University, Turkey for her poster on Multi-walled nanofiber reinforced self-healing, smart composite material production via triaxial electrospinning technique. The award was presented by Irish NMP National contact point, Dr. Sergio Fernandez-Ceballos of Enterprise Ireland.

Also during the Gala Dinner, 10 project finalists presented 1 minute presentations and video shorts of their projects, prior to the judging of the overall winner by all those present. The prize-winning project was Sonodrugs – Image-Controlled Ultrasound Induced Drug Delivery, represented by Chares Sio, PhD of Philips Research - and awards were presented to all finalists by Herbert von Bose, EU commission’s Director of Industrial Technologies.

On the eve of the Conference launch, a reception was held for the guest speakers in the Science Gallery of Trinity College. The reception was hosted by the CRANN Institute. The reception was followed by dinner for the guest speakers at Dublin Castle. Before the dinner, the guests were warmly welcomed to Ireland and to Dublin by the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Naoise O Muiri. Herbert von Bose thanked the Lord Mayor, Enterprise Ireland and Spinverse for their warm hospitality towards all the guests.

The themes of the sessions stemmed from the discussions with the Steering Committee of the Event, European Commission representatives, Event Beneficiaries, and the individual experts identified in each theme. The speakers for each session were chosen in the same process. Based on the advice of the Steering Group, European Commission representatives, event beneficiaries, and the individual experts identified in each theme, the session topics were chosen and speakers to each topic invited. This was an iterative process in which discussion about the topics and the speakers kept on until early June 2013 when all the speakers for the event had confirmed.

The 3 plenaries and 15 parallel sessions were composed into four thematic tracks: Environment, Energy and Transport, Life Sciences, Commercialisation and Cooperation, and Industrial Applications and Nano-engineering. Below the individual sessions with their storyline and agenda are listed. Sessions usually had the form of individual talks followed by questions & answers from the audience. Audiovisual material was incorporated into some of the presentations.

It was determined that speakers are invited to cover four genres: applications and benefits of nanotechnology, scientific state-of-the-art of nano-science, societal issues and innovation & commercialization processes. The topics and speakers chosen, based on the recommendation of the expert groups are listed in the next section of this report. There were in total 96 speakers in the parallel and plenary sessions, including session chairs.

Gender breakdowns of the speakers was that 18/96 speakers were female (18.8 % female, 81.2 % male representation). Country breakdown of speakers was as follows.

Ireland 20 (20.8 %)
Germany 13 (13.5 %)

Graphic Design activities

An Initial conference logo was designed for preliminary promotional purposes during 2012. See Annex 11. This was incorporated into a leaflet design which was distributed at various Events during 2012 and meetings which included NMP Programme Committee meetings and EU Public Private Partnership brokerage meetings in Brussels. The Design was based on the text used for previous conferences e.g.: ENF2013. No defined colour scheme was available.

With the development of the website towards the end of 2012 a review of the Logo was undertaken and a number of iterations created. For simplicity, ease of printing and with reference to the European context and the conference location (Irish national colours are Green White and Orange) the final design was developed. See Annex 12. Two versions were created depending on the medium to be used. The shorter version ENF2013 for website etc and EuroNanoForum2013 for printing material. The newsletter template was designed by a website designer, eCeltic, after the website was created. The newsletter template was to reflect the image and feel of the event website.

In December 2012, the designer made different ENF 2013 banners, including different sizes and types of static and animated versions. He also created the event flyer (A5 size) and two roll-ups. The event flyer was adjusted in March 2013 for printed advertisements (see ANNEX 1 to 3)

From April to June 2013, the conference brochure materials were created in cooperation with the designer. These included the delegate badges and the conference book of 12 pages to be given out to all the delegates (see ANNEX 4 to 6). At the same time, other materials to be used at the event location were designed, such as the walls of the registration desks and the slides to be shown on LED Boards around the venue.

Marketing materials

The majority of the marketing materials were created by Spinverse and their sub-contracted designer Replica Productions and approved by Enterprise Ireland. Specific flyers, presentations and posters were developed by Enterprise Ireland. Marketing materials included the following:

1. Banners and Roll-ups
2. Flyers
3. Media Kit and Press Kit
4. Media partnership presentation, newsletters, marketing emails

Media Partnerships

One important part of the marketing activities for the EuroNanoForum 2013 was the development of media partnerships. Five different media partnership packages were created by Spinverse for international media, with the option to adjust them to the desired level of the possible partners. New partnerships were created from December 2012 until May 2013 by Spinverse.

Media Partnership packages aimed at increased visibility for both parties. They included standard activities such as logo and link exchange on websites, in the conference guide, tickets to the event and a possibility for space on the Media Table at the event for the partner. In turn, the ENF team received publicity in the forms of logo and link exchange on websites; event description and other information published on websites and / or newsletters, mentions in event listings, social media and other published advertisements.

The targeted media were strategic players located in various EU member states, and active especially in the fields of technology, science, business & finance in relation to nanotechnology. Possible partners included both online and offline magazines, newspapers and other media. As the EuroNanoForum 2013 took place in Dublin, an important target group was the UK and Irish media.

Enterprise Ireland has a very active relationship with the Irish national and regional media. Through the PR efforts of the Research & Innovation department, Irish media specialising in Science and Technology are very aware of Enterprise Ireland’s role in this space. During the preparations for EuroNanoForum Enterprise Ireland issued a number of invites to Irish media to attend the event and ensured all major publications in this area were aware of the EuroNanoForum and the significance of this conference being held in Ireland.
