Objective
The aim of the Astrolabium project is to create a portal and a network of mobility centres to promote research opportunities in Portugal and to provide information and assistance to the potential candidates concerning housing, healthcare, schooling, taxation, social security, transports, culture, tourism, etc in Portugal. The whole information will be available in Portuguese and English. Both are meant to integrate the European Researcher?s mobility portal and the European network of Mobility Centres. This project builds on the existing information provided by websites of FCT, welcome offices of universities and research institutes, ministries, local authorities, housing agencies, etc., but requires format harmonization with European requisits and negotiation with all entities in view of adapting and extending the information to serve researchers? needs. To address the problem of the translation into English, we decided to use human translation of the ?static information?, supported by the information provider, and dynamic machine translation (translation on the spot, by demand) for ephemeral information using the SYSTRAN modules for Portuguese recently developed. This demands customisation of the system in terms of terminology, expressions and writing practices of the different types of texts (job, house adverts, etc) and integration with the information providers systems.
