Wearable Augmented Reality 3D Displays

Final Report Summary - WEAR3D (Wearable Augmented Reality 3D Displays)

Wear3D project team was focused on overcoming the fundamental challenges of wearable augmented reality (AR) displays related to optics and computational requirements. We exploited the wearable display challenges from multiple perspectives and developed novel theoretical framework and computational algorithms, and built several proof of concept laboratory demonstrators. We developed full color dynamic holographic displays while simultaneously providing a wide field of view (FOV), high (retinal) resolution and natural (visual fatigue free) 3D using fast computational algorithms. We also developed a number of novel micro-structured surfaces for display and light field based imaging. The project has been quite innovative and resulted in 12 patent applications, 2 ERC-Proof of Concept projects, and 2 spin-off companies, which are exploiting the results of the project for commercialization.
