Plasma propulsion with electronegative gases

Objetivo

Deep space exploration, with human interplanetary missions and robotic missions to neighbouring solar systems, are not possible with today's technology. Much effort is put into developing thrusters that use less fuel, are safer and go faster than those currently used on space missions.

The proposed research project aims to revolutionize deep space exploration by developing a prototype of plasma thrusters based on a new concept recently patented by the host institution (LPTP, Laboratoire de Physique et Technologie des Plasmas, Ecole Polytechnique).

The concept is called PEGASES, for Plasma Propulsion with Electronegative GASES. The prototype will use both the negative and the positive ions as propellant and will therefore potentially be both more fuel efficient and more reliable than today's electrical propulsion systems.

The fellow will play a significant role in the PEGASES project by carrying out the preliminary plasma physics experiments and develop a profound understanding of the fundamental phenomena involved. She will supervise PhD students and manage a large research team towards a frontier technology development and test at the European Space Agency.

The project will give the fellow the solid foundation on which to build an independent research career in the academic world.
