Lung stem cells and small-cell carcinoma

Objetivo

The existence of tumourigenic stem cells has been described in a number of solid tumours, and recent evidence suggests the existence of a similar cell population in lung adenocarcinomas.

This proposal will utilise mouse models of human small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) to address the relationship between tissue stem cells and cancer stem cells and whether non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and SCLC are derived from a common tumourigenic progenitor.

Results obtained from this study should advance our understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying lung disease and are expected to directly translate in the clinic, though the identification of early diagnosis markers, new prevention strategies and more efficient therapies.
