Objective
The objective of MEDTERM (Medical Terminology) was to study the possibilities of turning the Dictionary of Medical Science - a currently bilingual terminology management tool - into a generic multilingual tool.
The web-based Dictionary of Medical Science is a tool for knowledge sharing as well as a work of reference. It provides new information about the meaning, use and translation of terms from the field of medicine. As a tool for knowledge sharing, the Dictionary of Medical Science differs from other dictionaries in a way that it allows additions, corrections and comments by users. New words, definitions and translations are continuously added after validation from both medical and linguistic specialists.
1,000 English terms within epidemiology and general medicine were supplied with definitions, explanations and other relevant lexicographic and linguistic information. The Danish, Estonian and Latvian equivalents were added, plus a shared database for the four languages established so that searches may be carried out across any combination of the included languages. The tool was then tested as a multilingual tool for knowledge sharing, translation and terminology management.
The project was expected to lead to the creation of an Internet-based tool for knowledge sharing, which is, in principle, open to any field of knowledge and all (Western) languages.
Central to the MEDTERM project was the idea of a knowledge community established across institutional, organisational and linguistic boundaries. The participants in this knowledge community meet via the multilingual tool, and through the joint use of this tool the participants compose a dynamic field in which knowledge sharing, knowledge creation and knowledge management are fused together.
It is possible for external parties to get free access to the bilingual MEDTERM dictionaries, e.g. the dynamic dictionaries of epidemiology (or tool for terminology management and knowledge sharing), in the following languages:
- English-Estonian-English;
- English-Latvian-English;
- English-Danish-English.
All interested users may send an e-mail with their request to tha@asb.dk. The MEDTERM project team is in the process of merging these three bilingual dictionaries into one dictionary covering all four languages.
