Objective
Lagrangian measurements of single-particle and multi-particle statistics are investigated in a medium-to-high Reynolds number, multi-function water-tunnel facility. A state-of-the-art three dimensional digital particle-tracking system, designed to achieve sub-Kolmogorov length and time scale resolution, is proposed. The detection system is further designed to resolve a large range of scales present in the flow field.
The flow facility will allow for investigations in decaying grid turbulence, strain/expansion regions, external flows, and transitional flows, and allow for a range of parameters, such as in Reynolds number, strain rates and Stokes number. The detection system is moved with the mean flow velocity in order to follow the motions of tracer particles and inertial particles, and is capable of simultaneously tracking up to 500 particles.
The proposed experimental facility is designed for long-term research in fluid dynamics and turbulence research at Reykjavik University. The focus is on dispersion and the geometrical evolution of identifiable flow structures in well conditioned flows as well as the persistent small-scale anisotropy present in turbulence. By controlling and systematically varying the large-scale anisotropy in the flow field, and by investigating its time evolution, important knowledge of the dynamical features of the turbulent flow field will be revealed.
The motions of monodisperse inertial particles of small Stokes number will be studied and compared to the motions of fluid particles. The effects of small scale anisotropy and coherent structures on the motions of inertial particles will be investigated.
