Knowledge-based Multicomponent Materials for Durable and Safe Performance

Objective

The KMM-Noël is proposed by 36 Participants representing leading European research institutes, university departments,SMEs and industry !n the field of KMM designed for enhanced performance in highly demanding loading and environmental conditions (thermo-mechanical and impact loading, high strain rates and temperature regimes, aggressive chemical environment and combinations thereof). Such regimes are typical of advanced applications in aerospace and automotive industry, turbo-machinery industry, teratology, electronic devices, biological implants, micro sensors, etc. The representatives of KMM are novel functionally graded materials, metal-ceramic composites, thin layers, intermetallics. The KMM-Noël will concentrate on understanding, designing and developing novel KMM to provide superior mechanical properties (high strength and hardness) while fulfilling some specific functionalities like low density, excellent performance !n high-temperature regimes, enhanced fracture toughness and fatigue lifetime, superior resistance to wear, corrosion, oxidation, hydrogen attack. The KMM-Noël integrating activities comprise the strategy making and Network integration activities. The strategy-making activities set out directions of progressive integration and build up a potential for long lasting integration They are arranged in 3 groups (activation, strengthening, consolidation) following 3 logical phases of integration. The integration activities are permanent tools aimed at integration of research facilities and equipment, education and training, technology transfer and intranet. The jointly executed research activities include processing of KMM, micro structural characterisation, modelling of KMM, industrial applications and standardisation of KMM. The spreading of excellence comprises: training of researchers, industrial workshops, foresight, and promotion. Two external networks will be created for dissemination and training activities outside the KMM-Noël.
