Sustainable Electrical & Electronic System for the Automotive Sector ( SEES)

Objective

Main objective of the SEES project is to develop sustainable, clean, cost- and eco-effective Electrical & Electronic System (EES) prototypes and dismantling/ recycling processes to increase the vehicle recovery/ reuse rate. In Europe the current recovery/ reuse rate of 75 % is mainly reached by metal recycling. Considering this state of the art the scientific breakthrough consists of improving the actual vehicle recycling scenario to achieve the targets fixed by the End-of-Life Vehicles Directive. The idea is to improve the present design to facilitate the dismantling and recycling of the materials used in the system. The project will be focused on automotive EES and plastics because these components are hardly recycled nowadays and they contain valuable but also, in some cases, hazardous substances. The main deliverables resulting from the R&D activities will be: - Integrated End-of-Life assessment of automotive EES - Economical & Environmental Assessment including End-of-life Scenarios - Recycling Scenario Software Support - Eco-Design Guidelines to improve future designs of car E&E Systems - Dismantling and Shredding manuals for electrical & electronic equipment - Demonstration and application of new dismantling and recycling technologies - Product prototype to be tested for assembly and disassembly, including "smart" materials - Dissemination & Exploitation of all SEES results SEES supports the objectives of the Sustainable Surface Transport Priority providing strategies and processes to clean dismantling and recycling of vehicles. This can be ensured by an experienced consortium of 11 partners (4 SME) covering the whole EES value chain. It includes one car manufacturer, one EES designer/manufacturer, one car dismantler,one car shredder, two EES recyclers, one plastic recycler, two universities, one research centre and one consultant. The consortium covers six EU member states and nne associated candidate country.
