Objetivo

The large natural history collections of Europe constitute an immensely significant resource for

scientific research. SYNTHESYS is a partnership of 19 of the European natural history collections-

holding institutions designed to create an integrated European infrastructure for researchers in the

natural sciences from a complementary but widely distributed and largely un-coordinated resource. It

aims to create a single 'virtual' museum service consisting of many physical collections, analytical

facilities and integrated databases of information about those collections. Mechanisms for achieving

this include a series of network activities: a complementarity activity bringing together information on

the strengths of each institution's collections and expertise leading to a co-ordinated European

development plan; a standards activity setting and assessing standards for the long-term preservation

of and access to these collections and identifying priority collections for improvement through

mechanisms such as training courses. A third activity coordinates the development of collection

databases across Europe to create an integrated, distributed European collection. New types of

collections such as tissue samples for molecular study are addressed by the fourth activity with

policies and common methodologies the main foci of the work. The fifth activity reviews new physical

analytical methods from other disciplines and how they might be applied in systematics and other

studies. A management activity will interact with all the above to ensure that the SYNTHESYS is

delivered to time and to budget. Products of these activities will include a series of workshops and

conferences; best practice publications; web-based publications and database access. The networking

activities will add value to the integrated access that will be provided to 19 institutions via the 11

national TAFs.
