Objective
A new water-based coating system for industrial high reflective metallic coatings will be deve1oped in this project. To achieve this high metallic reflectivity matching those of a recently developed Japanese organic solvent based spray coating technology i n a environmentalfriendly water-based coating system, several fundamental physical and chemical obstacles have to be overcome by suitable research. This will be achieved by: the development of new specially adopted sub-micron aluminium pigments with even, high reflective and organic substance free surfaces the development of a specialized nano-coating process to protect, stabilize and functionalise this pigments for the use in an aqueous system the development of a tailored binder matrix with specific, w ell defined chemical and physical properties towards the pigments, the substrates and external influences the formulation of a aqueous coating system combining pigments andbinder matrix with suitable additives to achieve the desired functionality and proce ssing properties the evaluation of the desired fundamental physical and chemical properties of the new aqueous coating, in accordance with the requirements of differentindustrial applications the prove of the fundamenta1 technical feasibility of the new c oating technology in industrial application processes. Successful realization of the project will not only dramatically improve the competitiveness of the involved SME partners, It will also decrease the dependency of European industry from Japanese tech nology and support the implementation of the EC Integrated Product Policy (IPP) and the EC voc Directive 1999/13/EG. The results of the research project will be protected and exploited by the SME partners after the project by development of suitable indust rial products and services. Awareness for the new coating technology in European industry will be generated by suitable dissemination actions.
