Ziel
The project aims at application of the cost-effective magnetic proxy method for high-density magnetic screening of the river sediments and soils in two serious environmental "hot spots" in the coastal zone of Bulgaria - Varna-Devnja and B ourgas regions. The presence of a number of large point sources (power plants, fertilizer and chemical industries, oil refinery) represents serious environmental hazard. The project has an interdisciplinary character, involving magnetic mapping, as well as laboratory integrated analyses of the particular co-existence between the heavy metals, organic pollutants, and the magnetic characteristics. Project objectives: 1) High density magnetic mapping of river sediments and adjacent landscapes; 2) Laboratory ma gnetic studies on sediment and soil samples taken from each measurement point and major pollution sources to establish a data base for the region. 3) Non-magnetic characterization of the anthropogenic magnetic phases, accompanying different industrial wast e discharges. 4) Construction of maps of the degree of industrial pollution in the investigated area and proposal of a strategy for environmental protection measures. The objective 1) will be accomplished by field susceptibility measurements. The research objective 2) will be achieved by using a set of laboratory magnetic methods: thermomagnetic analysis; stepwise acquisition, alternating field and thermal demagnetization of laboratory remanences (ARM, IRM); calculation of grain size dependent ratios; hyste resis measurements on magnetic separates and single grains. Non-magnetic methods (objective 3) include: microscopy (optical, SEM, TEM); qualitative EDX analysis; quantitative microprobe analysis; XRD; geochemical (organic and inorganic) analyses for determ ination of heavy metal content and organic compounds of the samples and source materials. On the basis of the results obtained we will be able to construct maps (objective 4) of the degree of contamination.
